The future of junior coaching at Metheringham squash club.

Dear members

As I am sure many of you know I have been running coaching sessions for junior members on Saturday mornings for some time now. On the majority of Saturdays between 8 to 16 kids of ages 7 to 15 will attend either or both of the two 1 hour lessons. In order for them to get the most out of the sessions, ideally more than one coach is required for this number of children and, at all times, at least one additional adult should be around in case of any issues that may arise.

For the past few months the assistance has been sporadic and for the last two weeks has been non-existent. I am afraid that this situation leaves me with no choice but to postpone any further coaching sessions until suitable assistance can be found.

So, this is an appeal for one or more people to step forward to offer their assistance with the Saturday coaching. But before I am inundated with so many offers, please be aware of what would be expected of you:

• Ideally you would have played squash (at any level) and have a reasonable understanding of the game.

• You must be willing to take the ESPA Level 1 squash coaching course. The club will pay the course fee but holding a current DBS certificate is mandatory to begin the course. The DBS can be applied for before the start of the course.

• Be able to commit to two hours from 09.30 – 11.30 on approximately 40 Saturdays per year.

• Attend some of the junior competitions throughout the county at weekends.

and

• Please bear in mind that this role is voluntary.

The kids who attend the sessions are great fun, and many show a real talent for the game. In the past few years we have had some good success with individual juniors and at junior team events. Because of the lack of assistance I have not recently advertised the junior coaching. However, I do believe that with the right coaching set up there are many more local kids that would enjoy the game of squash and, as importantly, go on to be adult members of the club.

To the parents of the juniors that attend coaching, I am genuinely sorry that it has come to this but I am confident that come mid-September we can resume the sessions and provide the kids with an even better coaching experience.

If you are interested or you would like any further information, please contact me directly on 07963 500241 or on email at info@megsquash.co.uk

Yours faithfully,

Garrie Darling
